Film No. 56  (2023)  July 23rd.  4:00 PM  PALACE Raine Sq, Cinema 6, Perth City.

"We're in a cabin in the Swedish woods because we have decided to pull the plug" (Teit talk on the phone to a friend as he says goodbye to hectic urban life).

NOMINEE: Best Feature (Karoline Lyngbye) Narcisse Award of the Neuchatel International Fantastic Film Festival 2023.

In my culture (Australia), when someone is having difficulty defining themselves, or needs to recalibrate to gain greater insight into who they are, we describe the starting point for change, as, having a good long hard look at themselves. Well, this Danish film has certainly embraced that idea.  SUPERPOSITION is a a concept film where the question is asked; what might happen if you actually got to meet yourself, your worst self, in the flesh, while you were having a mid-life crisis?

Short film maker, Karoline Lyngbye's (BASTARDEN, THE VISITdebut feature takes us on this journey of self reflection through Stine (Marie Bach Hansen), Teit (Mikel Boe Folsgaard) and their son Nemo (Milo Olsen). They are a young family who have decided to live off the grid to so they might "find themselves". We meet them as they enter the Swedish woods, where there is no radio signal and follow them until they exit again, regaining commercial radio signal. And the 95 minutes in between is balanced with humour, unnerving drama, high tension and a sprinkle of horror. The film's poster says it all.

I'll say no more, other than if you are in your mid 30's to early 40's and life is testing you from multiple perspectives, then seeing this "pot-boiler", with your partner may be effective enough in content to make or break your situation. I'm hoping Lyngbye has pushed the buttons that will give you the wake up call you have been seeking.  9GUMS.
